Underwater warfare systems developer Kraken Sonar Systems announced on 13 June that it had signed a teaming agreement with Germany’s Atlas Elektronik.
The teaming agreement will primarily focus on the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN’s) Remote Mine Disposal System (RMDS) requirement that is expected to be awarded in 2018. Under the RMDS programme, the RCN is looking to develop a modular stand-off mine countermeasure capability, which is able to detect, classify, localise, identify, and dispose of sea mines and underwater improvised explosive devices.
As part of the programme, the RMDS project is intended to “leverage proven commercial-off-the-shelf unmanned systems and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology,” according to the Canadian government’s 2016 Defence Acquisition Guide.
