Luftwaffe planners request confidential briefing on F-35

19 May 2017

German Luftwaffe planners have officially requested a confidential briefing on the capabilities of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter from their US Air Force counterparts.

Germany is not involved in the international F-35 programme. The request, which Jane's understands was sent earlier in March this year, is part of a fact-finding mission and in-depth evaluation of available solutions by the Luftwaffe to find a suitable candidate for its Future Air Combat System (FCAS) programme. The FCAS platform is planned as a replacement for the service's Panavia Tornado fleet from 2035, taking over the various combat roles the Tornado currently fulfills and operating alongside the Eurofighter Typhoon.
