FNSS Savunma Sistemleri has unveiled the first prototype of the Kaplan MT Modern Medium Weight Tank (MMWT) at the IDEF 2017 exhibition.

The vehicle under joint development by FNSS and Indonesian defence prime PT Pindad to meet the potential requirements of Indonesia, using internal research and development funding under an agreement signed in 2014.

Under the first phase of the Kaplan MT development programme, two prototypes are being built, as well as one additional hull for ballistic and mine testing.

Following shakedown trials in Turkey the prototype will be delivered to Indonesia and will be shown during a major parade in Jakarta in October.

The vehicle is expected to be readied for production in late 2018 if it successfully completes local trials, and could eventually be employed to provide direct fire support to dismounted troops.

It has a conventional layout with the driver at the front, turret in the middle and power pack at the rear.

FNSS said the Kaplan MT features a high level of protection comprising of a baseline all welded steel hull to which applique armour can be applied.

The vehicle is fitted with the Belgian CMI Defence 3015 turret, which is understood to already be in production for an unidentified export customer.

This turret is armed with a stabilised 105 mm rifled gun fed by a bustle mounted automatic loader.

A 7.62 mm machine gun (MG) is mounted co-axial with the main armament and there are banks of electrically operated smoke grenade launchers fitted, which are coupled to the laser warning system.

A computerised fire-control system (FCS) is fitted with commander and gunner each provided with a stabilised day/thermal sighting system incorporating a laser rangefinder.

The powerpack comprises the diesel engine, automatic transmission and cooling system, producing a power-to-weight ratio of 20 hp/tonne, a maximum road speed of up to 70 km/h and road range of up to 450 km.
