Brazilian Army eyes new mobile mortar system

03 May 2017

The Brazilian Army is expected to launch a competition to buy a 120 mm vehicle-mounted mortar system for its Iveco VBTP-MR Guarani 6x6 mortar carrier variant, officials told Jane's.

The army's Manufacturing Directorate of the Department of Science and Technology is now outlining the system's technical specifications.

A request for information (RFI) is scheduled to be issued in second half of 2017 by the Brazilian Army Commission in Washington and a request for proposals (RFP) in 2018 for a contract for two prototypes. Between the RFI and RFP the army will update and ratify requirements and budget estimates.

The army on 22 November 2016 purchased 1,580 6x6s and expects to have 107 of them in a self-propelled mortar configuration designated as VBC Mrt-MR (Viatura Blindada de Combate Morteiro-Média de Rodas).
