Argentina's icebreaker starts at-sea trials

26 April 2017

Argentina's ARA Almirante Irízar , the only icebreaker in the southern hemisphere, sailed on 25 April for its first tests after 10 years of long-delayed repairs and modernisation following a nearly catastrophic fire.

The vessel left Tandanor Shipyard under its own power for a three-day navigation from the Rio de la Plata to Puerto Belgrano and back, performing the first stage of Harbour Acceptance Tests and Sea Acceptance Tests. Almirante Irízar is expected to take part in Argentina's next Antarctic expedition in November 2017.

The icebreaker was seriously damaged by fire and almost completely lost on 10 April 2007 while returning from Antarctica.
