US lines up equipment package for Iraqi Kurds

The US Defense Security Co-operation Agency (DSCA) announced on 17 April that the State Department approved the sale of an equipment package to equip two Iraqi Kurdish light infantry brigades and two artillery battalions.

It said the package requested by the Kurdish Regional Government's Ministry of Peshmerga includes 36 refurbished 105 mm M119A2 towed howitzers, 4,400 M16A4 rifles, 46 M2 .50 calibre heavy machine guns, 186 7.62 mm M240B machine guns, and an unspecified number of mortars.

The requested vehicles include 113 M1151 Humvees (including 77 up-armoured ones), an unspecified number of mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles (MRAPs), and various other support vehicles that include light and medium tactical trucks.
