Mass protests, opposition arrests in Chad likely in six-month outlook; direct targeting of foreign companies unlikely

21 April 2017

The Chadian civil society organisation 'Tchad sans Déby' (Chad without Déby) has called for a mass turnout in the capital, N'Djamena, on 23 April to protest against President Idriss Déby's "authoritarian and unjust" regime.

The organisers are also calling for the release of three civil society leaders, arrested recently by the authorities. Lawyers and human rights groups say they have no knowledge of the whereabouts of the three or the reasons for their arrest. Justice Minister Mahmat Ahmat Hassan claims he is unaware of the detentions. Protests have been growing since last year over unpaid salaries and deteriorating living conditions, with the government responding by arresting and jailing activists.
