Planners in Germany are looking to reorient the country's military posture away from overseas operations towards national and NATO territorial defence becoming the prime directive, despite a restructuring to focus on overseas deployments such as to Afghanistan only being initiated in 2011.
The newly proposed strategy calls for the Bundeswehr to transform once more in order to defend national and alliance territory in all military spheres, including the space and cyber domains. To achieve this the plans call for a return to NATO defence planning being the base for formulating German military requirements and capabilities. However, ongoing and future overseas operations will still be conducted, but will use forces drawn from home and alliance defence structures rather than having an organisation exclusively tailored towards overseas deployments, as is currently the case.
