Japanese navy to conduct joint drills with US CSG headed to Korean Peninsula, say reports

13 April 2017

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) will conduct joint naval exercises with the US Navy Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group (CSG) as the latter heads to waters near the Korean Peninsula, according to media reports.

"Japan wants to despatch several destroyers as the Carl Vinson [CSG] enters the East China Sea," the Reuters news agency quoted unnamed sources as saying on 12 April.

"The JMSDF may conduct helicopter landings … on the ships, as well as communication drills, as the USS Carl Vinson and its escort ships pass through waters close to Japanese territory," added the media outlet.

The Asashi Shimbun newspaper reported that same day that the plan is believed to have been drafted after Japan and the United States agreed to "contain" North Korea in light of repeated provocative acts.
