Indian Navy launches Barak-1 from carrier

30 March 2017

The Indian Navy (IN) successfully conducted the maiden test firing of the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)-Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Barak-1 ship point defence missile from INS Vikramaditya, its sole Russian-origin aircraft carrier, on 24 March.

IN officials told Jane's that the missile engaged and destroyed a low flying target at a range of 10-12 km off India's west coast in the Arabian Sea.

In an official statement the navy declared that the Barak-1 firing was carried out as part of the Western Naval Command's 'Operational Readiness Inspection' and to enhance Vikramaditya 's interception capabilities against incoming aircraft, anti-ship missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
