US Army to trial 60 kW laser for vehicle-mounted air defence

16 March 2017

The US Army will soon experiment with using a 60 kW solid-state laser for air defence missions, according to Richard DeFatta, director of the Future Warfare Center at US Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC).

In April the army expects to receive the new laser to integrate on its High Energy Laser Mobile Test Truck (HELMTT), formerly known as the High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator, DeFatta said during 15 March remarks at the Association of the US Army (AUSA) Global Force 2017 symposium in Huntsville, Alabama.

The SMDC is ultimately working towards a 100 kW laser, DeFatta said.

The HELMTT is a technology integration and demonstration effort with a laser system, beam control system, and supporting subsystems integrated into a large tactical vehicle.
