India confirms potential move to set up defence procurement agency

13 March 2017

India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that it is considering the establishment of a dedicated executive agency to manage defence procurement.

Citing a parliamentary reply by defence minister Manohar Parrikar, the MoD said in a press release on 10 March that setting up the new organisation had been recommended in February by a committee convened to suggest ways to restructure the MoD's acquisition wing.

"The committee has recommended the creation of a central, autonomous, empowered professional organisation to build up indigenous defence capability as a strategic imperative for long-term self-reliance," said Parrikar, according to the MoD press release.

Jane's has previously reported that the new agency is likely to be named the Defence Capability Acquisition Authority.
