23 February 2017

Key Points

  • Norway and Germany are to co-develop an evolved version of Kongsberg's Naval Strike Missile
  • Agreement on the full terms of the co-operation is planned in mid-2017

Germany is to join with Norway to develop an improved version of the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) to meet the joint long-term anti-surface warfare needs of the Germany Navy and the Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN).

The government-to-government agreement, announced on 13 February, has been struck as an extension to a strategic Norwegian/German partnership on future submarines previously announced on 3 February. As well as meeting the common operational needs of the two navies, the jointly developed NSM derivative will also be the subject of a co-operation in the fields of maintenance, training, and logistics.
