Med-Eng has launched a new unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) focused on explosive ordnance disposal (EOD).
The Avenger platform was developed and manufactured by ICP NewTech and features a clean-sheet design based on feedback from EOD operators, with specific capability aims of conducting EOD operations in congested urban environments. It pays special consideration to vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices; supporting multiple third-party sensors for detecting chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats; and has a manipulator arm with an extended reach, high levels of dexterity, and high lifting capacity.
The platform can carry a payload of up to 70 kg and has a modular architecture that features multiple mounts that enable a range of sensors to be carried concurrently; these can also be easily swapped out. The manipulator arm has 7 degrees-of-freedom and a lifting capacity of 40 kg.
Depending on the terrain, environment, and RF activity, the system can be operated to a distance of up to 1km with wireless line of sight communications, and up to 300 m non-line of sight (NLOS).
Avenger has a tracked mobility system featuring a 'no-throw' design that ejects debris such as gravel. Attention has been paid to the suspension system, which has been ruggedised in order to limit vibration and provide a clearer video feed to the command post. The vehicle also has a 'stance control' feature that enables operators to raise or lower the leading track edges for climbing over obstacles, as well as aiding stability when lifting. Avenger is capable of clearing curbs and obstacles up to 8 cm high and can traverse gradients of 45°.
The on-board computer brings together data from numerous sensors and cameras - one being a Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) unit with x30 zoom - which is then relayed to the command post in real time. The operator is also able to view an on-screen UGV mimic.
