Fresh hostilities in Ukraine aimed at 'testing' new US administration, say officials

08 February 2017

The unconventional mid-winter military campaign against Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine by pro-Russia forces in the region is "testing the will" of the new US administration, argue members of the European Parliament (MEPs), who called for a stronger EU security response to the crisis.

"It does not make sense to open a new campaign in the middle of winter. This is a political probing by Russia, which is very probably exploring how the White House will react," Romanian MEP Ioan Pascu said during a 6 February meeting of the European Parliament's security and defence sub-committee in Brussels.

Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Ukraine's vice prime minister for European integration, told the sub-committee that Russia "is showing that it can pull strings as needed", but she pointed above all to the human toll of events around Adviivka.
