UK-developed quantum key distribution technology set for trials

26 January 2017

A UK quantum key distribution (QKD) capability is to be trialled by a potential user within one year, according to developer BT.

Under joint development with Toshiba at BT's research and development (R&D) centre in Ipswich, the technology has demonstrated the ability to detect intrusion or eavesdropping attempts on the fibre-optic cable used to relay messages using single photons.

Further information on the specifics of the developmental technology has also been released. A BT/Toshiba technology demonstrator has validated the ability of the quantum cryptography to detect interference with the photons' time of arrival, such as that generated through attempts to 'tap' the cable.
