China emphasises opposition to THAAD deployment

12 January 2017

China has called for "discretion" from Washington and Seoul regarding the planned deployment of the US Army's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to South Korea.

THAAD is "detrimental to strategic stability, mutual trust, and the strategic security interests of China and other countries", said the State Council Information Office in a security white paper published on 11 January.

"China strongly urges the US and [South Korea] to stop this process," the paper said, adding that Beijing will keep striving for the "denuclearisation and long-term peace and stability of the [Korean] Peninsula and of northeast Asia as a whole".
