Honduran military deploys to Western Sahara UN Mission, Colombia

11 January 2017

Four Honduran military officers have travelled to join the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), a Honduran military press release reported on 10 January.

According to UN statistics, Honduras has fewer than 100 troops in two UN operations: experts on mission in MINURSO and contingent troops in Haiti.

Additionally, a delegation of nine Honduran military personnel travelled to Colombia in late December to participate in the Monitoring and Verification Mechanism that oversees the cease-fire between Colombia and Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) insurgents. The personnel will remain in the country for one year. A 10 January Honduran military communiqué pictured the personnel at a pre-demobilisation camp belonging to FARC's Frente 34 'Alberto Martinez'.
