The European Union's 28 nations agreed on 11 January to extend their security mission in Mali - EUCAP Sahel Mali - for another two years until 14 January 2019. They also set aside a budget of EUR29.7 million (USD31.1 million) to cover the mission's common overhead costs during the period.
EUCAP Sahel Mali is advising and training Mali's internal security forces to reform the country's security sector. It provides training to Mali's national guard, gendarmerie, and police. The mission was launched on 15 April 2014, and its headquarters are in Mali's capital, Bamako.
