The Chinese navy's Liaoning carrier group entered Taiwan's air defence identification zone (ADIZ) on 11 January while returning from exercises in the South China Sea, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) said in a statement.
The carrier group entered the area covered by the ADIZ around 0700 h local time while sailing north through the Taiwan Strait, said the MND, adding that it asked the public to remain calm. There seems to have been no violation of Taiwanese territorial waters.
Taiwanese authorities reacted by scrambling fighter aircraft and navy ships to "surveil and control" the passage of the Chinese warships through the narrow body of water separating Taiwan and China, Taiwanese defence ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.
