Lieutenant Commander Matt Knight, a US Pacific Command (USPACOM) spokesperson, confirmed the AUV type to IHS Jane's on 19 December.

The glider was being operated by USNS Bowditch , a Pathfinder-class survey ship, when it was taken by an armed People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessel 50 n miles northwest of Subic Bay, Philippines, according to the Pentagon. That location is not far from the disputed Scarborough Shoal, which China claims as its territory.
