The Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) Dual I and its associated weapon systems were tested against a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) target on 14 December, according to the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA).

MDA and sailors aboard USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53), an Aegis baseline 9.C1 equipped destroyer, fired a salvo of two SM-6 Dual I missiles against the MRBM target to demonstrate the system's sea based terminal (SBT) endo-atmospheric defensive capability, the agency said.

The weapons engaged a threat-representative MRBM target, but officials cannot provide specific details on the target's capabilities, MDA spokesperson Chris Johnson told IHS Jane's .

"Programme officials will continue evaluating system performance based upon telemetry and other data obtained during the test," the agency said.
