HMCS Toronto has completed the refit portion of its modernisation carried out by Irving Shipbuilding, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) announced on 29 November. Toronto is the last of the Halifax-class frigates to be modernised under the CAD4.3 billion (USD3.1 billion) Halifax Class Modernization/Frigate Life Extension program (HCM/FELEX).
The programme began in 2010, with the first of the modernised frigates re-entering service in 2014. Some of the upgrades include a Lockheed Martin Canada CMS 330 Combat Management System, Saab CEROS 200 fire control director, and Thales Canada Sirius infrared search and track (IRST) system. BAE Systems also upgraded the Bofors 57 mm gun to the Mk 3 configuration.
