Philippines looks to secure defence investment from Japan

27 October 2016

The Philippines has invited Japanese companies to invest in its defence industry as a means of strengthening strategic relations as well as boosting domestic capabilities.

During Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte's visit to Tokyo, which concluded October 27, the two countries held a trade forum at which Philippine government officials highlighted opportunities in defence investment.

In comments reported by Philippine national news agencies, Charito Plaza, the director general of the country's economic zone authority, told the forum that the Philippines would welcome Japanese investment in its planned defence industry complex.

"Through the defence industrial complex we will be encouraging and inviting investors on military equipment, software, hardware, arms and munitions," Plaza said.
