New Commission space strategy points to secure satellite communications

26 October 2016

The European Commission outlined on 26 October its plan for a future EU space strategy, the objectives of which include a future secure communications platform for security and defence authorities and an improved space surveillance and tracking capability to guard against cyber threats to Europe's space-based assets and ground infrastructure.

Noting that space is central to Europe's "strategy economy", Elzbieta Bienkowska, European commissioner for the internal market, said when presenting the plan, "We want to strengthen our collective security, our active defence. Space technologies are key to ensuring a high level of resilience and autonomy to act [and] no member state can do it on their own."
