AUSA 2016: SMDC, GDLS to test mobile laser defences in January

04 October 2016

US Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) and General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) are to trial a Mobile Expeditionary High Energy Laser (MEHEL 2.0) with a 5 kW beam director in January, GDLS officials told IHS Jane's.

MEHEL is in a second phase after trailing a 2 kW laser against unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and the 5 kW laser, supplied by partner Boeing, is to provide faster engagement times and greater range, Kendall Linson, GDLS' business development manager for enterprise business development, said on 3 October at the annual Association of the US Army (AUSA) 2016 conference in Washington, DC.
