South Korea's Hanwha has pinpointed the Philippines as a target market for expansion following the company's contract, announced earlier this year, to supply amphibious assault vehicles (AAVs) to the Philippine Marine Corps.
The AAV contract is worth around USD50 million and features the sale of eight vehicles, which are based on the company's AAV7A1 AAV in service with the Republic of Korea Marine Corps.
Hanwha subsidiary Hanwha Techwin (formerly Samsung Techwin) has produced the AAV7A1 under licence from BAE Systems since 1995. The vehicle is fitted with a standard one-person turret armed with a .50-cal K6 machine gun and a 40 mm K4 automatic grenade launcher.
