DCD Defence of South Africa has selected Tyron from the UK (Hall 5, Stand H731), and its South African partner Global Wheel, to provide complete run-flat wheel assemblies for its Mountain Lion, a 4x4 armoured utility vehicle with four-wheel steering. The selection was made following a successful evaluation on a DCD Springbuck armoured personnel carrier that included extensive testing in a number of extreme African terrains.
Tyron’s all-terrain rubber (ATR) wheels comprise the company’s multipart run-flat tyre, enhanced to ensure beadlock, fitted on Global Wheel’s two-part bolt-together steel wheel. The tyres can be changed at the roadside without requiring specialist tools, while the rubber provides better shock absorption and better off-road performance than a composite run-flat tyre. The ATR also performed well in ballistic tests, including kerb strikes and IED attacks. During the Springbuck tests, the tyres demonstrated the ability to run for a minimum of 50km, even with all four tyres damaged.
