China and Russia take aim at THAAD with hypersonic programmes

10 May 2016

South Korea's planned deployment of the Lockheed Martin Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system has spurred both China and Russia to accelerate their hypersonic vehicle test programmes.

According to US news reporting based on leaks from the Pentagon, China conducted a seventh flight test of its DF-ZF hypersonic glider technology demonstrator on 29 April. The Chinese tests of this vehicle are conducted at the Wuzhai test range in Shanxi province, giving this vehicle the initial US intelligence community designator of WU-14. The glider payload is launched on top of a ballistic missile, thought to be a DF-21 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
