On 9 December, members of anarchist group Black Bloc infiltrated an initially peaceful student protest in the Republica Square, in central São Paulo, against the state education policy.
Approximately 2,000 people gathered, according to the police. The anarchists attacked vehicles and a bank branch with stones, destroyed rubbish containers, and phone booths; they also erected barricades using rubbish, which they set on fire. They fought with the police with stones, sticks, glass bottles, and fireworks. Police officers responded with stun grenades, tear gas, and pepper spray to disperse them. Thirteen people were injured, including eight police officers, and 10 demonstrators were arrested.
