South Korea's Hanwha is preparing a potential bid for Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), IHS Jane's understands.
In June 2015 Hanwha completed the acquisition of the defence units previously owned by Samsung. This transaction consisted of Hanwha's purchase of a majority 32.4% stake in Samsung Techwin for KRW840 billion (USD744 million). The acquisition included Samsung Techwin's 50% stake in Samsung Thales and a 10% stake in KAI.
IHS Jane's understands that Hanwha now aims to increase its shareholding in KAI with a view to securing majority ownership in the aerospace company whose flagship product is the T-50 Golden Eagle advanced jet trainer.
