Turkish prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu pledged to "wipe out" the Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan (PKK) at a televised news conference in the capital Ankara on 8 September, following an attack by the group on army forces in the Daglica area of Hakkâri province on 6 September that left at least 16 soldiers dead. The PKK claimed responsibility for the attack. In response, the military conducted a series of air strikes on suspected PKK camps in mountain areas in the southeast of the country, killing at least 10 militants.

In his speech, Davutoglu stated, "Those mountains will be cleared of these terrorists.
