Obama to seek Congress' blessing in campaign against Islamic State

21 January 2015

The White House will ask Congress for a new authorisation for the use of military force (AUMF) against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, US president Barack Obama said during his annual State of the Union address.

"Tonight I call on this Congress to show the world that we are united in this mission by passing a resolution to authorise the use of force against ISIL [an alternative acronym for Islamic State]," he said in the 20 January remarks, which generally highlight the president's agenda for the year.

Congress mainly supports the idea of creating and voting on a new AUMF specifically for operations against the Islamic State, and the White House is expected to send lawmakers a version to consider soon.
