Attacks on cargo and military in Angola's Cabinda exclave more likely, but low risk to energy assets

12 January 2015

EVENT

The Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC) on 8 January claimed responsibility for two attacks on Angolan Armed Forces (Forças Armadas de Angola: FAA) units in the northern province of Cabinda.

A first ambush of an army vehicle near Vito Novo, Buco Zau municipality, on 20 December, resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and injury to seven others. A skirmish at Ntataba, Buco Zau, on 22 December killed one soldier and seriously injured another.

FLEC has been waging a low-level separatist guerrilla campaign since the 1960s, demanding independence from Angola. A peace agreement with the government of Angola in 2006 led to the splintering of FLEC into various factions, two of which continued the armed campaign.
