Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) (Hangar 1, Stand D11, Indian Pavilion) was set up in 1970 as a manufacturing base for guided weapons systems, reflecting the national wish for technological selfreliance.
In its early years, it was involved in the manufacture of missiles and guided munitions under licence, but has developed into a world-class defence equipment manufacturer of products that include defence systems, air-to-air missiles and torpedoes. The press recently reported that India test-fired BDL’s supersonic Akash missile, which can strike targets at a range of 25km. According to reports, two squadrons of the Indian Air Force are equipped with Akash, to be followed by a further eight squadrons. The Indian Army has also ordered two regiments of Akash.
