Taliban on the offensive in Helmand

01 July 2014

Afghan Taliban insurgents have launched repeated attacks on security force checkpoints in northern Helmand after massing in the Sangin area, according to local officials.

Large numbers of police officers have been killed and thousands of residents have left their homes as a result of the attacks, which have also targetted the Musa Qala and Nowzad districts. Fighting has slowed in some areas around Sangin after more than a week, although a severe improvised explosive device (IED) threat remains.

Local officials in Sangin told IHS Jane's that 800 Taliban had gathered in the area and that they were receiving increased support from "outside", believed to mean Pakistan, that more men were joining them and that as a result they were able to stage more attacks.
