Operation 'Atlantic Resolve' takes shape as US seeks to reassure European allies

30 June 2014

The United States is formulating a plan for more comprehensive training and exercises in Europe, as well as for potentially bolstering its forward units there, under Operation 'Atlantic Resolve', according to the top NATO and US European Command (EUCOM) general.

US President Barack Obama in early June announced his European Reassurance Initiative (ERI) - for which he has requested USD1 billion (USD925 million of which would be for the US Department of Defence) for fiscal year 2015 - in order to comfort American allies in Europe that are alarmed by Russia's role in stoking the Ukrainian conflict.

"It's too early to lay out the details of what we will do, but it will cover increased and enhanced training, readiness exercises, and necessary facility improvements that we will need in order to conduct quality training and readiness activities with all of our allies and partners," US Air Force General Philip Breedlove, NATO Supreme Allied Commander and head of EUCOM, said on 30 June.
