Planned anti-government protests by opposition Albanian parties likely to pass off peacefully

21 May 2014

EVENT

Lulzim Basha, the mayor of Tirana and head of the main opposition Democratic Party (Partia Demokratike e Shqipërisë: PD), has announced that anti-government protests, which were held 20 May, will continue on 23 May outside the National Assembly in the city centre.

The aim of the protests is to force Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign from office due to what Basha considers to be a completely failed anti-narcotics strategy. Following the arrest of an Albanian national and his Italian partner on 10 May as they attempted to smuggle more than 400 kilograms of marijuana into Italy on light aircraft, harsh debates ensued in the National Assembly between the governing coalition and the PD.
