Estonian MoD suffers cyber attack

The Estonian Defence Ministry's (MoD's) website was subjected to a cyber attack on 1 November and was temporarily shut down as a precaution, while systems technicians contended with the problems.

While no damage is understood to have been done, the incident is somewhat embarrassing for the country, which has heavily invested in its cyber capabilities since suffering serious cyber attacks in 2007. Estonia hosts the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCD COE) at Talinn.

The site was hit by a large Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack and remained out of action for several hours. The attacks did not affect the ministry's internal networks or servers.
