- Aegis BMD and THAAD systems worked in conjunction to intercept two incoming medium-range ballistic missile targets
- The event trialled various layers of the overall US BMDS
The US Department of Defense (DoD) on 10 September conducted a multi-layered missile defence test that pitted the Pentagon's sea-based system and land-based terminal phase system against two targets.
DoD and US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) officials qualified the test as a success.
The event stressed the ability of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon systems "to function in a layered defence architecture and defeat a raid of two nearly simultaneously launched [medium-range] ballistic missile targets," the DoD said in a statement.
