Pakistani political parties back Taliban peace process

09 September 2013

A conference of leaders from Pakistan's main political parties hosted by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif formally endorsed the government's controversial plan to begin peace negotiations with Taliban militants based in the tribal region along the Afghan border.

The decision taken at the All Parties Conference on 9 September, also attended by army chief of staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and Lieutenant General Zaheerul Islam, director general of the army-run Inter-Services Intelligence agency, gave Sharif a political mandate to go ahead with what could be a politically risky move.

The decision to seek peace talks with the Taliban comes almost 12 years after the country abruptly ended its support for Afghanistan's Taliban government and backed the US military intervention that removed it from power.
