Clashes between the MNLF and security forces kill six people in the Philippines' Zamboanga peninsula

08 September 2013

A POLICE officer, a soldier, and four civilians were killed and at least 24 other people were wounded during clashes between Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) militants and security forces in and around Zamboanga City in the Philippines' Mindanao region early on 9 September, the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Sun Star reported. Security forces engaged the militants reportedly led by commander Habier Malik of the Nur Misuari's MNLF faction as they approached the city on eight boats from Basilan Island, which prompted further clashes in at least five villages around the city. The MNLF confirmed the clashes, but claimed they were prompted by security forces.
