Islamists' assassination attempt claim indicates increased risk of violence in Egypt

08 September 2013

EVENT

If confirmed, the claim by the Sinai-based Islamist militant group Jamaat Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (JABM) of responsibility for the attempted assassination of Egyptian minister of interior Mohamed Ibrahim in Cairo on 5 September, indicates an increased insurgency risk as the result of Sinai militant capability spreading into Egypt's main cities.

In a video claiming responsibility, JABM said it would also attack Minister of Defence Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and media personalities who had 'spread lies' about the Islamists. This risk of further attacks is amplified by an aggressive new Egyptian military operation against militants in the Sinai that is likely to see retaliatory operations.
