Chile to add light aircraft, UAVs for maritime surveillance

Chile is planning to increase its aerial maritime surveillance and control capabilities by adding new light aircraft for patrolling its coast and littorals as well as extended range medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), sources in Santiago told IHS Jane's .

The light aircraft are to be acquired under a programme to replace eight Cessna O-2A Skymaster IIs that were transferred to the Chilean Navy from US surplus in the 1990s. New platforms would supplement Chile's fleet of P-3 Orion and C295 Persuader maritime patrol aircraft.

Two aircraft types are being assessed as potential solutions: the Vulcanair AP.68TP and the Tecnam P2006T - both Italian-made twin-engine, turbo-prop aircraft.
