Japan reports sharp rise in intercepts of Chinese aircraft

11 July 2013

Intercepts of Chinese aircraft by the Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) have increased dramatically over the last decade due to an "escalation of activities by China in the waters and airspace around Japan, including incursions into Japanese territorial waters and airspace", figures released by the Japanese Ministry of Defence (MoD) reveal.

Japanese fighters, such as these F-15J Eagles, have seen a dramatic increase in the number of times they have been scrambled to intercept Chinese aircraft over the last decade. While the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) accounted for just two JASDF intercepts in 2003, this had risen to 306 in 2012 (the last year for which figures are available), according to the MoD's Defense of Japan 2013 White Paper released in early July.

Further to this, the PLAAF's proportion has increased over this period from just 1.3% of all aircraft intercepted to 54% (the other nations listed as being Russia, Taiwan, and 'Other Countries').
