Navantia to sign Aegis maintenance contract

Spain's state-owned naval shipbuilding, systems, and support group Navantia is poised to sign a contract worth around EUR200 million (USD261 million) a year to deliver a maintenance package for the four US Navy (USN) Aegis destroyers which will be stationed in Rota, southern Spain, from 2014.

Under a bilateral basing agreement, two Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers (USS Ross and USS Donald Cook ) will arrive in 2014, with two more (USS Porter and USS Carney ) in 2015. The Aegis-equipped ships, enabled for the detection, tracking, and interception of ballistic missiles, will form part of the US government's European Phased Adaptive Approach missile defence shield.
