The Libyan Navy has participated in its first multinational exercise since the end of the 2011 conflict that overthrew Muammar Ghadaffi.
The Libyans sent the Combattante II-class fast attack missile craft Shafak (534) and two PV30 patrol boats to the 'Canale 13' exercise held in Malta between 16-21 June. The exercise also involved naval forces from Algeria, Italy, France, Morocco, and Tunisia.
Libya's WAL news agency reported on 24 June that three Libyan naval vessels then participated in a bilateral exercise called 'Shahin 13' ('Chahine 13') with a French frigate off the coast of Tripoli.
Shafak is the only one of Libya's seven Combattante IIs known to be serviceable in the wake of the conflict, during which several others were targeted by airstrikes carried out by NATO on the night of 19-20 May 2011.
