Insurgent ATGM attacks increase in Syria

24 June 2013

There has been a surge in the number of videos being posted on the internet by insurgent groups showing attacks on the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) using anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs).

Although some ATGMs have been captured from the SAA over the past 18 months, videos showing them being used in attacks have been released only sporadically until recent weeks, lending credence to reports that a foreign state is supplying the weapons.

At least 10 ATGM videos have been released since the beginning of June, most of which show them effectively destroying main battle tanks or infantry fighting vehicles.

The 9M113 Konkurs (AT-5 'Spandrel'), a wire-guided, semi-automatic command-to-line-of-sight (SACLOS) system that entered service with Soviet forces in the 1970s, can be seen clearly in some of the videos, although the older 9K11 Malyutka (AT-3 'Sagger') has also been used.
