Operational debut for Global Hawk

08 October 2001
Operational debut for Global Hawk

The US-led air and missile strikes against the Al-Qaeda terrorist network and Taliban regime in Afghanistan on 7 October 2001 were preceded by the first operational deployment of the Global Hawk high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned air vehicle (UAV).

Working alongside other UAV reconnaissance assets, at least one Global Hawk was used to provide reconnaissance prior to the strikes and for successive post-strike battle damage assessment.

A record-breaking aircraft in its own right - it was the first ever UAV to fly non-stop across the Pacific - the Global Hawk has been rushed from its development phase into becoming one of the US-led coalition's most valuable reconnaissance assets.
