Open skies, closed minds?

The future of the controversial bilateral open skies agreements, struck between the US and a string of European Union (EU) member states, has been thrown into doubt by an advocate general of the European Court of Justice.
Antonio Tizzano has formally advised the full court to declare as illegal, deals made with Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria and Germany.
The European Court of Justice usually follows the advice of its advocate generals and, given that it now has the power to levy massive recurring fines against recalcitrant member states, national governments will be wary of disregarding its ruling.
